Caid Essebsi, Merkel pledge stronger ties

President of the Republic Beji Caid Essebsi Wednesday had at his residence in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, a talk with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, on the fringes of the 5th African Union – European Union (AU-EU) Summit which works are due to open late on Wednesday afternoon.

Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui told TAP the meeting focused on the privileged relations of cooperation and friendship binding Tunisia and Germany and the boost they saw since 2011, particularly after Merkel’s Tunisia visit in March and the one paid by the President to Berlin in June 2017.

The President of the Republic commended Tunisian-German cooperation and welcomed the stances taken by Germany in support of Tunisia’s democratic process.

Caid Essebsi also said Tunisia is keen to strengthen relations with Germany at a time when it is facing a wide array of economic, social and security challenges that call for an exceptional support from the German government, Jhinaoui highlighted.

The German Chancellor hailed the steps made in Tunisia, mainly on the path of achieving democracy, and said her country takes interest in the success of the Tunisian experience and will keep on bringing needed support.
