Call for proposals for environmental projects for community associations and organisations to be launched soon

“A call for proposals for projects will be launched soon, for the benefit of associations and grassroots organisations around strategic initiatives in the environment sector,” Saber Ben Mbarek, National Coordinator of the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP).

In a statement to TAP on the sidelines of a workshop to review the strategy of phase 6 of the programme initiated since 1993 in Tunisia, Ben Mbarek said that strategic initiatives in the environmental sector will be discussed during this workshop which brings together representatives of civil society, public institutions, researchers and international organisations.

This workshop, organised by the GEF SGP and the Arab Women’s Centre for Training and Research (CAWTAR), follows a series of regional workshops organised last February in the north, centre and south of Tunisia to which took part some 80 local associations and representatives of public institutions, “he added.

He said strategic initiatives will be aligned with national environmental strategies and plans.

Besides, he recalled that the GEF SGP, a fund managed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), specialises in capacity building, the financing of associations for the achievement of projects on themes of environment (between 1,000 and 50,000 dollars), besides the capitalisation and the exchange of good practices.

“The goal is to help local associations contribute to solving and coping with environmental challenges through projects,” he said.

He added that since 1993, the GEF SGP has financed 180 community projects in Tunisian territory around several themes such as the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, the fight against climate change, the protection of international waters, the fight against land degradation, sustainable forest management and the fight against persistent organic pollutants.

In turn, Soukeina Bouraoui, Executive Director of CAWTAR Centre emphasised that the centre wants to highlight the contribution of women in the preservation of environment by strengthening their capacities and helping them to create projects in this sector.

“Local associations, especially women, need to be aware that they have a great role to play in preserving the global environment and achieving sustainable development goals by 2030”, she said.

National and international stakeholders participate in the workshop. They will discuss several topics such as human rights to environment, the GEF SGP 6 programme, national environmental priorities and innovative initiatives of the GEF SGP.
