Chahed announces new measures for employment of disabled people

Prime Minister Youssef Chahed announced on Tuesday at a national conference on employment and disability, new decisions favouring the supervision, care and professional integration of persons with disabilities.

These decisions consist in speeding up the establishment of a statistical network on the situation of persons with disabilities that complies with international standards in force and integrate the employability of disable people into the enterprise’s social responsibility.

To reinforce the legislative framework of associations working in the field of disability in order to promote the training and supervision system by adapting them to the working environment is also among these decisions. The idea is also to diversify the funding sources and the possibilities of the National Vocational Training Fund to adapt the work sites to the needs of disabled people.

It was also decided to institutionalise support and co-ordination at the national, regional and local levels for the disabled professional integration to ensure complementary and quality services between the public, the private sector and the civil society.

A national structure stemming from the Prime Ministry will be set up whose mission is to follow up these procedures at the regional and local levels and to draw up a first report within a period not exceeding six months from the date of its creation.

Chahed also pointed out during the conference organised at the initiative of the Ministry of Vocational Training and Employment, that his government will work for the development of Tunisian legislation on disability in compliance with the Constitution and The International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its Optional Protocol.

“The employment of persons with disabilities is the responsibility of all sides supporting the State’s action to facilitate their integration into working life,” he said, considering that “disability must not deprive the citizen of access to employment in the public or private sector if he meets the criteria requested.”
