Chahed: Intensifying control operations to combat practice of vegetable distribution monopolization

Prime Minister Youssef Chahed said economic control operations will be stepped up to combat the phenomenon of monopolisation of vegetable distribution and preserve the purchasing power of citizens at a time when prices for some vegetables, such as potatoes and peppers, are rising excessively.

He pointed out in a statement to the media on the fringes of a surprise visit on Wednesday at dawn to the Bir Kasaa wholesale market, that supermarkets will be supplied with quantities from the vegetable buffer stock, in order to rebalance prices in the markets, while other quantities of this stock will be injected into the wholesale markets to be distributed in official channels.

Economic control teams seized on the sidelines of this visit, 12 tons of potatoes, 5 tons of which were seized in the presence of Chahed.

To this end, he stressed the need to ensure the distribution of vegetables in official channels and to strictly enforce the law against speculators, given the cost borne by the State for the constitution of vegetable stocks.

Mohamed Chokri Rajeb, Charge de Mission to the Trade Minister told TAP that “the wholesale price of a kilo of potatoes was set at 970 millimes while this price reached 1,100 dinar during the retail sale.

For his part, farmer Abdelhamid Salhi assured that “the prices of vegetables are much higher in some outlets, since the kilo of potatoes is sold at 2,300 dinars,” explaining that this rise is due to the increase in seasonal seed prices of potatoes.

Several farmers mentioned the existence of speculation and monopoly practices in the potato trade, which led to the auction of this product in addition to the lack of production.

On the other hand, the director of competition and economic surveys at the Trade Ministry Abdekader Timoumi pointed out that the control operations are at the level of markets and exit portals to fight against monopolistic and speculative operations.

He assured that a “perceptible improvement has been recorded in control operations,” specifying that no less than 70 tons of onions and potatoes had been seized nationwide while 300 tons of these vegetables had been seized from depots in October.

The visit also revealed that some potato traders hide quantities of potatoes to sell them illegally, while the wholesale market has a significant lack of potato supply.
