(Tap correspondent/ Sofien Manai) – President of the European Council Charles Michel reaffirmed, on Friday in Brussels, the support of this institution to the democratic transition process in Tunisia, underlining the readiness to provide all the necessary support to Tunisia to meet its economic and health challenges.
At the end of his meeting in Brussels with President Kais Saied, the European official stressed that “this new phase of bilateral relations is based on shared values and a reciprocal commitment to strengthening political, economic and cultural ties between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
According to him, the exchanges, which took place in a very cordial atmosphere, paid particular attention to youth, education, scientific research, emigration, security and economic relations, which have been among the structuring subjects of Tunisian-European cooperation for several years.
“The European Council reiterates its long-term commitment to Tunisia and its willingness to support the country in its efforts to consolidate its democratic institutions and promote a green, competitive economy,” he said in a note distributed to journalists.
Besides, Charles Michel reviewed the position of the European Council on several regional issues of common interest and welcomed the positive role played by Tunisia in the Libyan issue.
For his part, President Kais Saied reaffirmed Tunisia’s commitment to the development of Tunisia-EU strategic relations, particularly in the political, economic, scientific and cultural fields.
In this regard, he thanked the European Union for its constant support since 2011, recalling the European contribution of more than three billion euros to support the socio-economic recovery of the country.
The Head of State said he had discussed with the President of the European Council, the socio-economic impact of the crisis related to the COVID-19 pandemic and discussed the economic and social reforms necessary for the recovery of economic activity and growth.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to reaffirm Tunisia’s support for the Palestinian people and their just cause and to recall the positive role played by Tunisia in the peaceful settlement of the Libyan crisis.
The President of the Republic returned to Tunisia on Friday evening after a two-day visit to Brussels (June 3 and 4) to participate in the second Tunisia-EU summit.
