Accra: Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, Ghana's National Chief Imam, has appealed to Members of Parliament to exhibit goodwill in resolving the ongoing legislative deadlock that has indefinitely suspended parliamentary sessions. With a general election looming in less than two months, the impasse has exacerbated political tensions among Ghanaians. According to Ghana News Agency, Sheikh Sharubutu made these remarks during the fourth annual National Muslim Conference of Ghana (NMCG) in Accra. The conference, themed "Towards Bridging the Gaps in National Healthcare Delivery in Ghana: The Role of the National Muslim Conference of Ghana (NMCG)," also saw the Chief Imam urging the government to recognize Muslims as partners in healthcare delivery, citing their historical contributions across various healing practices. The National Chief Imam emphasized the importance of the conference in strengthening diplomatic ties with Muslim nations and attracting investment to support Ghana's growth. He envisioned a future where interfaith dialogue fosters peaceful coexistence and urged Muslims to pay their zakat to empower communities while advocating for non-violence during elections. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who attended the conference, pledged to acknowledge faith-based groups as governmental development partners. He announced a policy initiative granting tax exemptions on certain imported materials for developmental purposes, particularly in health and education sectors. Dr. Bawumia also highlighted the return of 40 scholarship students from Zongo communities who studied medicine in Cuba, aiming to bolster healthcare access in those areas. Mr. Inusah Mohammed Baba, General Secretary of the NMCG, reported significant progress on various strategic initiatives over the past four years, including the Ghana Muslim Education Strategy and the Ghana Muslim Economic Empowerment Strategy. He announced the impending unveiling of the Ghana Muslim Health Strategy and the establishment of the Ghana Muslim Chamber of Commerce and Industry as part of the Muslim Economic Empowerment Strategy. Mr. Baba also mentioned a completed research initiative to develop an appropriate Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) program to tackle unemployment among Muslim youth. He affirmed the NMCG's commitment to religious freedom and active Muslim participation in governance while contributing positively to Ghana's development.
