WA, Ghana – In a concerted effort to steer children away from drug abuse, the Upper West Regional chapter of Curious Minds (CM) Ghana emphasized the importance of abstaining from such activities. The organization stressed that drug abuse could impede children’s development and hinder the realization of their life aspirations.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Upper West Regional Programmes Manager of CM Ghana, the advice was given during an event organized by CM Ghana at Dignafuro in the Wa Municipality to mark this year’s World Children’s Day. The event saw the participation of approximately 200 children from Dignafuro Islamic and Kaggu Basic School, along with opinion leaders and parents from the community. The celebration included drama and poetry performances by Kaggu Junior High School students, aimed at spreading awareness against drug abuse.
World Children’s Day, observed annually on November 20, is an initiative by the United Nations to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improve children’s welfare. This year’s theme, ‘For every child, every right’, reflects the commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of every child. Miss Abdul-Rahaman highlighted CM Ghana’s dedication to protecting these rights and identified drug abuse as detrimental to children’s development.
In addition to discussing the hazards of drug abuse, the event also addressed socio-cultural norms and practices like child marriage, which can deny girls their rights. Miss Abdul-Rahaman mentioned that CM Ghana plans to hold radio discussions with children, providing them a platform to advocate for their rights.
Mr. Mulumba Ngmenlabagna Songsore, the Executive Director of Necessary Aid Alliance, cautioned the children about the health risks associated with drug abuse, including kidney failure, stroke, and mental health issues. He explained how these health complications could adversely affect their education and overall development.
Mr. Francis Soriye, the Assembly Member of the Dignafuro Electoral Area, advised the children to heed the teachings of their parents and elders, warning against the ‘get rich quick’ mentality which could lead them to engage in harmful social vices. He expressed gratitude to CM Ghana for hosting the World Children’s Day event in the area, acknowledging its role in providing vital information for the children’s growth and development.
