Citizens Against Coup opposes dissolution of Supreme Judicial Council

The Citizens Against the Coup initiative affirmed, Monday, its “total rejection” of the decision of the President of the Republic to dissolve the Supreme Judicial Council” without legal or constitutional basis”.

It expressed, in a statement, its support for the Council “which resists and is committed to its independence and its role in the framework of a democratic regime based on the separation of powers.

It also welcomes the “strong impetus of the judiciary to defend the independence of its power” as well as the unanimous insistence of democratic forces and civil society on the independence of justice and the separation of powers.

The initiative calls on “the Tunisian people and all the forces in the country that support democracy and the Constitution to respond en masse to stop this destructive coup”.

It also calls on the Parliament to “assume its responsibilities and hold a general assembly to take decisions to put an end to the coup and the collapse of the constitutional edifice”.

The President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed announced on Saturday evening, from the Ministry of Interior, the dissolution of the Supreme Judicial Council, stating that a decree to this effect will be issued shortly.

Judicial structures and political parties have expressed their opposition to this decision.
