Components of the civil society called, Monday, President Kais Saied to present a clear roadmap on the period ahead and formed their concern about the concentration of powers in the hands of the President of the Republic.
The National Union of Tunisian Journalists insisted on the need for a clear vision regarding the exceptional measures announced Sunday night by the President of the Republic, pursuant to Article 80 of the Constitution.
The President of the Republic, Kaïs Saïed, decided on Sunday to freeze all activities of the parliament.
He decided to lift the parliamentary immunity of all MPs and prosecute those who are in trouble with the law. He added that he will now chair the prosecution.
In an address to Tunisians, broadcast on the television channel Watanyia 1, Kaïs Saïed announced “that he will take over the executive power helped by a government presided over by a prime minister that he will appoint himself.
The journalists’ union also proposes a participatory roadmap with well-defined deadlines that preserves the transitional process.
The Tunisian Association of Constitutional Law, warned against possible abuses, noting that the country is now, after the freezing of parliament and the dismissal of the Prime Minister, in a situation of exception.
According to the association, the suspension of the activities of the House of People’s Representatives is not among the exceptional measures that can be taken on the basis of Article 80 of the Constitution.
In a letter addressed to the President of the Republic, “I Watch” called on the President of the Republic to present a roadmap with fixed deadlines and to provide control measures to avoid the monopoly of power.
The organisation recommends a participatory approach in the development of the roadmap.It called, in its letter, for a judicious choice of the Prime Minister based on competence rather than allegiance in order to avoid the mistakes of the past.
The association referred in its letter the serious errors of the Mechichi government, the delay of the parliament to install the constitutional bodies and the spread of corruption in the judiciary, calling on the President of the Republic to provide reasons justifying its recourse to Article 80 of the Constitution and to accelerate the establishment of the Constitutional Court.
President Kais Saied held on Monday a series of meetings with national organisations and civil society associations including the Tunisian General Labour Union, which, in a statement stressed that the measures announced the day before by the President of the Republic must be accompanied by constitutional guarantees.
