A civil society organisation «C’est à Vous De Changer Bizerte » (You change Bizerte) is working on restoring facades of houses around the old port of the city and painting them with bright colours.
The idea comes from coloured houses in Cape Town, which is located at the far south in South Africa, its former president Ahmed Hamdoun told TAP.
Bizerte is the farthest city north on the continent, which would be harmonious with Cape Town.
The project is roughly 70% done. The couple of houses already restored and painted made a good impression on foreign and local tourists.
The site was also picked for photography and video clip shootings. The project will be completed within a couple of months, Hamdoun pointed out.
The organisation is also conducting awareness raising campaigns, especially among youth, to promote the area as a distinguished site for local and foreign tourists.
It took part with other civil society organisations and the city council in cleaning the surroundings of the harbour.
«You change Bizerte» presented another programme to the city council and line ministries to link the harbour to the sea from a second downstream in the southern part.
This will help reduce pollution in the harbour, which has been on the receiving end of sewage water and vessels oily waste for years.
The authorities did not refuse the programme, he added, but they did express concerns over potential infrastructure complications.
