Representatives of civil society tabled Wednesday proposals in connection to the project of support to the decentralisation process, as part of a national consultation. The delay in issuing relevant implementation decrees was also discussed.
The package of proposals put forward during a workshop in Tunis includes a smaller number of municipal councillors, an updated list of freshly created municipalities and partnership agreements between civil society organisations and local communities.
President of the organisation committee Mustapha Ben Jaâfar said this workshop is the 5th out of 16 local, regional and national ones. They were held in a bid to assess the decentralisation process in Tunisia as part of a participatory democratic process.
President of the Foresight and Decentralisation Process Support Authority Mondher Bousnina said final results of the consultation will be made evailable within the coming months. Political instability had an impact on the publication of legal texts on municipalities, regions and districts, he added.
Representative of the National Federation of Tunisian Cities (French: FNVT) Mohamed Alaya outlined the results of a recent consultation that involved 350 municipalities.
The financial stability of municipalities, the organic law on elected local officials, the financial system of local communities and participatory democracy were the thrusts of the FNVT consultation.
