Tunisia has experienced in September 2021 an extension of the summer heat, as all regions have experienced maximum and minimum temperatures above normal. The average temperature throughout Tunisia (24 stations) has exceeded the normal (25.4 ° C) by 3 ° C, which makes September 2021, the hottest September since 1950, according to the monthly climatological bulletin, published Friday by the INM.
This year’ September is also ranked among the driest months, with a total of 24 reference stations of only 276.7 mm, unlike September 2020 which was ranked the rainiest since 1950, with a total of 1410.9 mm.
// Temperatures well above normal
In the continuity of the exceptional rise in temperatures of the summer, temperatures remained largely above normal in September. Most of Tunisia was affected by the heat and most regions have experienced exceptionally high temperatures, but they did not reach new records. At the end of the month (September 29 and 30), a decrease in maximum temperatures was recorded in most regions but was below the reference averages. Minimum temperatures also decreased slightly and were at the level of the reference averages.
The monthly averages of maximum temperature ranged from 30°C in Kélibia to 39.2°C in El Borma. Throughout Tunisia (24 stations), the overall average maximum temperature reached a record of 34°C and exceeded the normal by 2.9°C.
The average daily minimum temperatures in September of the 24 main stations has also recorded a record with a value of 22.8 ° C and a departure from the normal of 3.1 ° C. The monthly averages varied between 18.5 ° C in Thala and 26.5 ° C in Tozeur.
// A deficit in rainfall
Rainfall was very deficient in September 2021. The total balance of the month of the 24 main stations was only 276.7 mm while the normal of the same stations is 847.2 mm which represents a deficit of 67%.
Rainfall was absent in most regions and deficits varied from one region to another from 30% to 100% except for Kelibia where 98 mm was recorded, a surplus of 116% compared to the normal for the month which is 45.4 mm.
//Generally light to moderate winds
Winds were generally weak to moderate, and their speed increased during the period from 1 to 5 September 2021 over the central-western and southern regions, where its maximum speed varied from 68 km/h in Gafsa to 76 km/h in Sidi Bouzid with a maximum of 122 km/h in Thala on September 03, 2021.
The winds were also strong during the period from September 9 to 11 over all the eastern coastal areas with a maximum speed ranging from 58 to Gabes 68 to Kélibia, and a maximum of 72 km / h in Monastir on September 10, 2021.
Winds were also strong on September 21, 2021, over the north, with a maximum speed ranging from 61 km/h in Tunis and 76 km/h in Kef and reaching a maximum speed of 83 km/h in Tabarka.
