Co-operation agreements between Zitouna University, IIUM and ISRA, concluded

Two co-operation agreements aimed to reinforce the Islamic finance teaching and use in Tunisia, were concluded on Saturday at the opening of the Sfax 5th International Forum on Islamic Finance (SIFIF) on the theme: Islamic Finance and Economic Empowerment: Toward an Innovative Approach to Development and Poverty and Unemployment Alleviation.

The 1st agreement was concluded between the Zitouna University and the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) and the 2nd one between the Zitouna University and Malaysia’s International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA).

Partnership with Malaysia in this field will give a boost to the nascent Tunisian experience in matters of Islamic finance training, given the importance of this Islamic country’s experience worldwide, SIFIF President Borhane Triqui affirmed.

Young students and researchers are the backbone of this co-operation between Tunisian and Malaysian universities, according to Director of Malaysia’s University’s International Relations Daoud Abdelmalak Hadabi.

Taking the floor at the opening of this forum, Minister to the Prime Minister in charge of Monitoring Public Projects and Programmes Ridha Saidi pointed out the importance of Islamic finance in the development of economic inclusion and promotion of development and employment.

The National Unity Government seeks to make of Tunisia a regional hub of Islamic finance during the coming stage, he said.

The two-day forum, April 7-8, is attended by experts and researchers from 14 countries.

Taking the floor, representative of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Hedi Nahoui underlined that empowerment is a condition and a means to combat poverty, a theme on which the IsDB is working, specifying that the highest poverty rate is recorded in Islamic countries.

For his part, Director-General of the Zitouna Foundation explained that economic and social empowerment will help improve the capacities of precarious categories in the participation and support to development.

An exhibition of Islamic financial products by several Islamic financial institutions, insurances and academic training establishments in this field was held on the fringes of the meeting.
