Commander Riadh Barrouta passes away

Commander Riadh Barrouta, one of the police officers stabbed on Wednesday by a takfiri element, passed away, affirms the information officer to the Interior Ministry.

The death of Commander Riadh Barrouta was also confirmed by director-general of the Rabta teaching hospital Hanene Arfa.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the victim was in serious condition. He suffered a cardiovascular arrest while being transferred to the hospital. Head of the cardiovascular surgery department at the Rabta Hospital Raouf Denguir told TAP that the victim had undergone neck surgery before being admitted to the intensive care unit.

A man called Zied Ben Salem Gharbi attacked Wednesday with a knife, a patrol of the traffic police in Bardo. He stabbed Commander Riadh Barrouta in his neck and wounded Captain Mohamed Aidi at the front.

The prosecutor’s office on Wednesday ordered the detainee to be held in police custody and handed over to the national crime investigation unit in El Gorjani.

The security forces present on the scene mastered the aggressor while he was trying to attack a third policeman.

According to the Interior Ministry, the attacker confessed, during the interrogation, to have adopted for three years the “takfiri” thought, convinced that the assassination of policemen is a form of “Jihad.”

Spokesman for the judicial counter-terrorism centre SofiAne Selliti said that the assailant, born in 1992, has no criminal record and was preparing to join terrorist groups in Libya.

The family of the victim had called to prosecute the takfiri person and inflict to him the heaviest penalty for having attempted to kill Riadh Barrouta (53), father of three children.
