Concerted action needed to promote social, solidarity economy in Arab countries

Governments, the private sector and civil society in Arab countries need to step up efforts to establish a fresh approach to setting up a new mechanism for the promotion of social and solidarity economy, said Director of the Development and Social Policies Department at the Arab League Tarek Nabil El Nabulsi.

Addressing Wednesday a workshop in Tunis on “Social and Solidarity Economy: Mechanism for Fighting Precarious Employment and Promoting Social Inclusion,” Nabulsi said a model of social and solidarity economy can yield results only if the private sector is involved to help generate jobs in line with the labour market requirements.

He also emphasised the importance of setting up mechanisms that foster adequate legislative frameworks for such economic models.

Arab countries face a string of challenges when it comes to attaining sustainable development and need to increase efforts to stamp out poverty and implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The meeting saw the participation of fourteen Arab countries.
