Cooperation agreements between Tunisia and Romania inked

A joint declaration on the Tunisian-Romanian joint commission scheduled for 2019 was signed on Thursday at the Foreign Ministry’s headquarters, in the presence of Khemaies Jhinaoui, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and his Romanian counterpart Teodor Viorel Melescanu.

A cooperation agreement on diplomatic training, a training programme in the fields of health and the medical sciences 2018/2020 and a cooperation agreement between the two countries’ press agencies were also signed.

At a press conference, after the signing ceremony, the Romanian Minister said that his visit confirms Romania’s interest in solid relations with Tunisia, which are based on trust and stability.

In this respect, he reminded that the two countries will celebrate, on December 16th, the 55th anniversary of the exchange of ambassadors.

Melescanu, who is visiting Tunisia on April 19 and 20, said consolidating political dialogue and expanding areas of cooperation with African countries and traditional partners in Romania are among the priorities of the current government of his country (2017-2020).

He also mentioned Romania’s readiness to intensify political exchanges and to boost cooperation relations in several important areas, as Romania is a member of the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) and Tunisia is a partner of the European Union and an active member of the Mediterranean dialogue.

“Romania is working to develop its economic partnership with Tunisia, particularly in the commercial field,” he said.

The Romanian diplomat also reaffirmed his country’s support for Tunisia’s efforts to devote democracy, develop its economy and participate in the security and stability of the neighbouring region of the European Union during a period marked by crisis in the Middle East.

“The meeting was an opportunity to exchange views on a number of regional and international issues, such as the situation in Libya and the Syrian crisis,” he added.

In turn, Khemaies Jhinaoui said the meeting was an opportunity to examine ways to strengthen cooperation between Tunisia and Romania in the economic field, saying that it was agreed to intensify the visits of cooperation between businessmen of both countries.

“This visit has identified the main areas of cooperation before being crowned by the holding of the Tunisian-Romanian Joint Commission as soon as possible,” he said.

He added that it was also an opportunity to deepen the political dialogue between the two countries as part of the implementation of the cooperation agreement signed in October 2016 between the two foreign ministries in Bucharest, and which concerns the training of diplomats.

Jhinaoui also said he had conveyed to his interlocutor Tunisia’s keenness to consolidate relations of cooperation with the European Union especially as Romania is an important member of the EU and will ensure the rotating presidency of the European Union in January 2019.

The situation of 1,700 Tunisian students in Romania and the Romanian experience in water resources and in several legal and security fields were discussed at this meeting, according to Jhinaoui, which underlines both parties’ will to step up communication between the relevant security services of the two countries.

Both sides also agreed to hold the next session of the Joint Commission and the five sectoral committees (the Committee on Defense, Security and Justice, the Committee on Economic and Commercial Affairs, the Committee on Education, and the Scientific Committee, the Committee on Tourism and the Committee on Decentralised Cooperation) at the beginning of next year, the last meeting having been organised in June 2008.
