Coordination body for North African progressive parties created

A provisional body tasked with coordination among North African progressive parties was created.

The creation of the Network of Democratic parties in North Africa was announced at the end of the meeting of North African progressive parties held Saturday and Sunday at the initiative of Machrou Tounes in Monastir and Sousse.

This body remains open to other political parties from North African countries.

In addition to Machrou Tounes, the authority includes Morocco’s Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), Socialist Union of Popular Forces and Front of Democratic Forces, Algerian Talaie El Hourriyet, El-Moustakbel Front and Rally for Culture and Democracy and Libya’s Haraket El Moustakbal, Al-Omma and the Republican Coalition party. Mauritania is also represented by the Rally for Mauritania, Machrou Tounes Sunday told a news conference in Sousse.

Party leaders agreed to exchange experiences, step up party, parliamentary, economic and cultural cooperation, in particular, and promote a common stance on issues of common interest as part of annual meetings.

The coordination body will meet by the end of the year in Tangier, Morocco.

Representatives of the Network of Democratic parties in North Africa said member parties will seek to put forward proposals to meet challenges and overcome barriers to the success of the Arab Maghreb Union.

They also said their parties are willing to coordinate their positions of solidarity with just causes and keep on fighting terrorism, extremism and the spread of weapons.
