COP 26 : Tunisia calls for setting global goal for climate change adaptation

Environment Minister Leila Chikhaoui urged the international community Wednesday in Glasgow, Scotland (UK) to have as a priority the setting of a global target for climate change adaptation.

The minister, who is leading the Tunisian delegation to works of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow (October 31- November 12), also underlined the need to put in place necessary support mechanisms for developing countries in a bid to help them implement their national adaptation programmes as set out in Article 7 of the Paris Agreement.

Tunisia, she added, is committed to meeting its pledges under the terms of the Paris Agreement.

The update of climate commitments shows a 45% greenhouse gas emissions reduction target by by 2030 instead of 41% as previously set.

The implementation of national commitments requires the mobilisation of funds decided at the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Conference and setting a new post-2025 climate finance goal. as

well as increased technological support for developing countries.

There is likewise need to agree on institutional and operating procedures, Chikhaoui said, and implement Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
