Council of State Member Urges Support to End Illegal Mining in Ghana

Accra: The Central Regional Council of State Member, Mr. Hakim Adei, has called on Ghanaians to support government initiatives aimed at eradicating illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, within the country.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Adei, while speaking at the 44th Anniversary and 4th Speech and Prize-Giving Day of Twifo Praso Senior High School in the Twifo Atti Morkwa District, highlighted the detrimental impact of illegal mining on the nation’s lands and water bodies. He emphasized that these destructive activities are the result of a few individuals driven by greed. Mr. Adei underscored the importance of a unified approach in tackling the issue of galamsey and urged all citizens and residents to collaborate in ending the practice.

The event took place under the theme: ’21st Century Skills and the World of Work, the Role of Modern-day Education.’ During the event, the Headteacher of Twifo Praso SHS, Mr. Daniel Kofi Aidoo, voiced concerns over several challenges faced by the school, including a shortage of computers, inadequate classrooms, dormitories, and the absence of a school bus, which forces the management to rent buses for official activities, thus straining the school’s finances. He called for urgent government intervention to address these issues and requested that the school be transitioned to a single-track system.

Mr. Isaac Yawson, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the school. He promised the provision of a modern ICT laboratory and other developmental projects to cater to the needs of the district.

Nana Kenny IV, the Omanhene (Paramount Chief) of Twifo Atti-Morkwa, advised students to avoid drug abuse and other negative behaviors that could harm their health and future.
