Court Discharges Hopeson Adorye Over Unprosecuted Case

Accra: The Dansoman Circuit Court has discharged Hopeson Adorye, a member of the Movement for Change, who was standing trial for the publication of false news. Adorye was initially arrested and arraigned in May 2024 by the police due to allegations of detonating explosives in the Volta Region during the 2016 General Election.

According to Ghana News Agency, the case was forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General for advice, but it encountered numerous delays attributed to the prosecution. Consequently, the court decided to dismiss the case on the grounds of lack of prosecution, leading to Adorye’s discharge.

Adorye’s self-confessed involvement in the explosive incident gained widespread attention, prompting demands for his arrest and questioning. Despite facing charges for spreading false news, Adorye denied any wrongdoing and was granted bail amounting to GHC20,000 with two sureties, one of which required justification.

Under the bail conditions, Adorye was also required to report to the police on a weekly basis.
