Former chairman of the House of  People’s Representatives (French: ARP) Committee on Health and Social Affairs Souhail Alouini said Tuesday  Tunisia is facing a health crisis due to the spread of the coronavirus and called for providing patients with medical oxygen at home.

Most hospitals reached full capacity and are facing pressure on oxygen beds, Alouini said, thus the need to administer medical oxygen at home.

The Health Ministry needs to speed up the aquisition of sufficient quantities of medical oxygen.  The COVID-19 Delta variant will become the most dominat strain in the coming period.  Amid the rapid spread of this strain, it is important to act as quickly as possible and get prepared for possible scenarios.

Alouini stressed the need to ensure strict compliance with health protocols so as to break the chains of infection.  Full lockdowns have to be decreed in wors-hit regions along with a ban on gatherings and festivities.

Seven cases of the Delta variant were logged in Kairaoun and 11 others in Greater Tunis, Siliana and Monastir.  The occupancy rate of intensive care and oxygen beds hit 100% in 10 governorates, the Health Ministry said on Monday.
