COVID-19: one-week targeted lockdown decreed in Kairouan

A one-week targeted lockdown was decreed for Kairouan starting Monday, the local commmittee to fight natural disasters announced on Sunday.
This includes removing tables and chairs from cafes and restaurants, suspending prayers in all mosques as well as cultural and sports activities and prohibiting all gatherings, Governor Mohamed Bourguiba told TAP.
The curfew will start at 8pm instead of 10 pm and weekly markets and hammams will be closed, he added.
“Civil society organisations and media outlets are urged to increase awareness-raising campaigns. The COVID-19 vaccination drive will be intensified in Kairouan’s delegations and villages and mobile teams will be disptached,” he further said.
Exams will take place as normal while ensuring compliance with the health protocol in all education establishments during this period, the official added.
These decisions will be suspended in the event of the epidemiological situation easing. Otherwise, a general lockdown will be decreed in the region, said the governor.
The local committee to fight natural disasters met Sunday in an extraordinary session after a 60% test positivity rate was reported in addition to a 100% hospitalisation rate. Nine patients had to be transferred to neighbouring governorates.
The meeting was attended by Health Minister Faouzi Mehdi, Chair of the Committee on Health at the House of People’s Representatives Ayachi Zammel and several MPs from the region.
