The situation in COVID-19 wards is under control despite pressure from the 5th wave, said Director-General in charge of public healthcare facilities at the Health Ministry Naoufel Somrani.
The number of hospitalisations spiked to 1,200 presently from 100 in December, Somrani told TAP on Tuesday.
Most patients in COVID-19 wards need medical oxygen, he added. Consequently, the occupancy rate of beds fitted with oxygen concentrators outpaced that of intensive care beds.
Demand for medical oxygen is close to 77,000 litres per day, while the daily production capacity is of 100,000 litres. Tunisia has 600,000 litres of medical oxygen reserves, the official added.
Five thousand oxygen concentrators were made available for hospitals; six oxygen generators are operational while a further four are being installed.
Four field hospitals are now operating out of 12 to relieve pressure on hospitals. They are the ones set up in El Menzeh, Marsa, Béja and Sfax with 30 to 80 beds .
