Crisis in Tunisia, political par excellence (Tabboubi)

“The crisis the country is going through is political par excellence,” said Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (French: UGTT) Nouredine Tabboubi. The ruling coalition is part of the problem, he emphasised.

“The coalition seeks to put its own interests first to the detriment of competence and integrity,” he said at a rally organised Saturday at the headquarters of the regional union in Gafsa.

“Instead of implementing the instructions of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the government must propose solutions and deliver results, he pointed out.

“This government is trying to involve the labour union in a conflict with parents and students in a bid to conceal its failure and inability to solve burning issues,” Tabboubi said.

Commenting on the suspension of classes and the demands of teachers, the trade union leader said the UGTT stands by teachers and disadvantaged categories and is determined, now more than ever, to defend the rights of the public and private sectors.

Tabboubi also said he did not expect a “threatening” and “tough” discourse in remarks about the Premier’s call Friday upon teachers to resume classes on Monday. The labour union will make sure the school year is a success, he emphasised.
