Tema: The Daylight Events organisation has organised an aerobics session to mark World Heart Day and also create awareness on the importance of keeping fit. The one-hour aerobics session brought together eight fitness clubs within the Tema Metropolis, which includes Tema Joint Church Fitness and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) Fitness Club, among others.
According to Ghana News Agency, Nana Yaw Danso, the Director of Events for Daylight Events, stated that the aerobics session was held to commemorate World Heart Day, globally celebrated annually on September 29, with the 2025 theme ‘Don’t Skip the Beat’. He emphasized the benefits of physical activities, particularly for the heart, and urged the public to engage in fitness activities, either by joining local fitness clubs or exercising at home through activities such as brisk walking.
He also highlighted the importance of avoiding sedentary lifestyles and activities like smoking and alcoholism, recommending regular health screenings to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Mr. Yaw Adjei Addo, the instructor for Tema Joint Church Fitness Club, remarked that physical activities should not be limited to instructor-led sessions but can also be practiced individually at home. He suggested walking for at least 30 minutes daily as a basic form of physical activity to maintain fitness.
Mr. Addo further emphasized the significance of building a strong heart to handle physical stress and advised individuals to rest when necessary to avoid overstraining the heart. Ms. Ethel Edifor from the GPHA Fitness Club noted that aerobics sessions enhance blood circulation to the heart and other organs.
Dr. Sam Darkwah, a medical doctor at Sinel Specialist Hospital, educated participants on the risk factors associated with cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, smoking, age, and gender. He detailed symptoms such as chest pain, heart tightness, shoulder and neck pain, difficulty in breathing, dizziness, nausea, and loss of consciousness. Dr. Darkwah applauded the organisers and encouraged individuals to monitor heart health and undergo regular screenings at health facilities.
