Road accidents in Tunisia continue to wipe out lives and break countless families.
Only this past weekend, a heavy toll was recorded: 17 dead and 56 injured, according to the National Observatory of Road Safety.
Another finding, and not the least alarming, that of the 29 % increase in the number of deaths on Tunisian roads recorded between January 1, 2023, and April 13, 2023, and this compared to the same period of 2022.
Despite the multiplication of awareness campaigns and the strengthening of roadside checks by law enforcement agencies, especially during the holidays and school vacations, these figures are struggling to decline given the irresponsible behaviour of some motorists.
Speed, inattentiveness, disregard for priority rules and driving under the influence of alcohol are among the main causes of road accidents, according to the same source.
In 2022, some 5451 accidents were recorded, causing 1044 deaths and 7867 injuries, according to statistics from the National Observatory of Road Safety.
