Debt of 64 municipalities in difficulty to be repaid (Local Affairs and Environment Ministry)

One hundred million dinars will be allocated to the debt repayment of 64 municipalities experiencing difficulties, Ministry of Local Affairs and Environment said.

This decision, approved Monday in a Cabinet Meeting, provides for the total shouldering of the debts of 28 municipalities and of 50% of the other 36.

However, the concerned municipalities undertake to repay all their debts to private enterprises, the same source added.

This decision will help ease the municipalities’ burden and to improve the quality of the services provided to citizens and their self-financing capacity, the department specifies in a press release, adding that this will meet keenness to ensure propitious environment for the municipal elections in 2018.

The ministry is mobilising the necessary funding to achieve development projects in 86 recently created municipalities or those whose borders have been expanded.

The ministry is endeavouring to develop the necessary structural reforms to improve the municipalities’ financial situation, by revising the legal framework of taxation or by restructuring the local communities’ mutual funds, the same source pointed out.
