Defence Minister meets ICRC Head of Mission in Tunisia

National Defence Minister Imed Memmiche received, on Monday, at the department’s headquarters, the head of the permanent mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Tunisia Rania Mechleb.

The meeting focused on ways to strengthen cooperation between the ministry and the ICRC office in the field of international humanitarian law in the military, said a statement issued Monday evening by the Ministry of Defence.

The minister affirmed, on this occasion, the commitment of the Tunisian military institution to human rights and the principles of international humanitarian law.

He stressed the need to intensify training sessions on how to deal with potential situations in times of crisis.

The head of the ICRC’s permanent mission in Tunisia said that the Committee is working to publicise its training programmes in the field of international humanitarian law in order to bring its services closer together in the framework of cooperation between the ministry and the ICRC.

She also welcomed the efforts made by the military institution to spread the culture of international humanitarian law in the military environment through the organisation of training sessions in this field.
