Defence Minister meets with NATO official

Security co-operation in the fight against terrorism, organised crime and smuggling was the focus of a meeting Friday in Tunis between Minister of National Defence Abdelkrim Zbidi and NATO Deputy Secretary-General for Defence Policy and Planning Jonathan Parish.

Zbidi welcomed the development of co-operation between Tunisia and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), particularly in the field of training, training, training of Special Forces and intelligence, calling for identifying new avenues for developing human resources, the Ministry of Defence said in a press statement.

“Tunisia relies on its own resources to meet the security challenges but also on co-operation with friendly countries and NATO, as a partner in the fight against terrorism,” he was quoted as saying in the same statement.

For his part, the NATO official reaffirmed the organisation’s willingness to continue to support Tunisia in its fight against terrorism, saying he will work to sensitise NATO member states to respond positively to needs of the military institution.

Parish also praised Tunisia’s progress towards democratic transition, calling Tunisia “a model to follow in the region”.
