Defense Minister meets with Vice-Chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee of German Bundestag

Bilateral military cooperation, the security situation in the region, and the issue of irregular migration were at the centre of Monday’s meeting of National Defense Minister Abdelkrim Zbidi and deputy chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee in the German Bundestag, Roderich Kiesewetter.

During the meeting, the Minister praised Germany’s support to Tunisia in its fight against terrorism and the level of bilateral cooperation in the areas of special forces training, mine clearance, military health, sustainable development and border control.

The minister also reaffirmed Tunisia’s support for international efforts aimed at a political settlement of the crisis in Libya, so as to restore peace and stability, a statement of the Defense Department reads.

Abdelkrim Zbidi added that Tunisia is working to strengthen and develop military cooperation between the two countries, bilaterally, but also, within the framework of the “5 + 5 Defense” initiative or the “7 + 6” Defense, Security and Justice “. This, he said, also included cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in the areas of intelligence and counter-terrorism.

For his part, Roderich Kiesewetter said that the German Bundestag notes with satisfaction the Tunisian-German high-level military cooperation and the progress made by Tunisia in the security field, affirming his country’s will to continue strengthening bilateral military cooperation.

The Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Bundestag was accompanied by the German Ambassador in Tunis.
