Detention warrant issued against Chafik Jarraya

The Judicial Financial Division’s investigating judge issued a detention warrant against businessman Chafik Jarraya for embezzlement, his lawyer Faycal Jadlaoui told TAP.

According to Jadlaoui, the investigating judge visited the detention place of his client, who failed to attend the hearing for health reasons, and inquired about the deterioration of Jarraya’s health condition.”

However, this did not halt him from issuing a detention warrant against Jarraya and to postpone his hearing until September 12, he added.

Chafik Jarraya was arrested last May during an arrest campaign conducted by the government against people suspected of corruption, smuggling and involvement in networks of the informal economy.

Decisions to place them under house arrest were made on the basis of “indications of their involvement in offences that could dangerously threaten security and public order”, the Interior Ministry said.

At the end of last May, the Tunisian military prosecutor’s office decided to investigate Chafik Jaraya and people which the investigation revealed their involvement “for harming the security of the state, treason and intelligence with a foreign power in time of peace”.

He is also accused of embezzlement.
