Accra: Mr Richard Osei Anim, Managing Partner of Coral Reef Innovation Africa, emphasized the critical role of digital literacy in unlocking Africa's development. He highlighted the need for innovation and creativity in the educational landscape to drive meaningful change and ensure sustained growth in the sector.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Anim made these comments during the launch of the Learnairium Initiative in Accra, which aims to empower students with the necessary tools to thrive in a tech-driven world. This initiative is designed to prepare students in Ghana for future careers, helping them transition confidently into a digital future. By partnering with Coral Reef Innovation Hub, the initiative seeks to create brighter opportunities and shape the future of education in the country.
Mr Anim stressed the importance of prioritizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, especially in education, to ensure positive outcomes in the face of the fourth industrial revolution. He noted that without fundamental digital literacy education, it would be challenging for individuals to remain relevant in the evolving world of work. He also commended the government for its efforts in the educational digital space, including the deployment of 45,000 laptops and the promotion of STEM schools.
He urged for more investment in the digital education sector, pointing out that the government cannot achieve this alone and must partner with corporate institutions and technology industries like Coral Reef Innovation Africa. The increasing digital skills gap in Ghana and across Africa has left many schools unprepared, lacking the curriculum and tools to teach AI and prepare students for future jobs. Mr Anim called for industry partnerships to address the challenges of limited teacher training and resources.
In a speech read on behalf of Mr Samuel George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, the importance of innovation as a driver for sustainable development was underscored. The Minister emphasized the need for an ecosystem approach to bring together stakeholders in the technology sector to revolutionize the digital age. He affirmed the government's readiness to support initiatives that enhance digitalization through enabling policies, acknowledging the nation-building work of Coral Reef Innovation Africa.
