Domestic violence against women up (Observatory)

The phenomenon of domestic violence suffered by women accounts for nearly 75 % of the forms of violence against women reported on the green line 1899 during the period from January 1 to September 30, 2021, head of observation, studies and communication at the National Observatory for the Prevention of Violence Against Women Sonia Zekri indicated to TAP on Saturday.

She pointed out that the total number of calls received by the observatory on violence against women during the same period stands at 1,154 calls out of a total of 5,878 calls (4,724 other questions), estimating that the frequency of violence against women has clearly increased, not to mention the cases not reported for multiple reasons (unawareness of the listening mechanisms), the legal framework, the willingness to protect the aggressors, etc.)

She added that domestic violence is due to various factors at the individual, family and community levels, and at the level of society in general.

Some factors are related to the perpetrator and others to the victim, she said, stressing the need to activate laws to eradicate the phenomenon of impunity and change mentalities, pointing out the existence of dissuasion and awareness-raising means, but both women and men contribute to the increase of the phenomenon of violence.

The Observatory released a press release denouncing the rise in violence against women, expressing alarm at the quantitative and qualitative increase in marital violence.

It called on all stakeholders to honour their commitments in accordance with the provisions of the Organic Law No. 2017-58 of 11 August 2017 on the elimination of violence against women.

The Observatory relies, according to the press release, on the political will to make the combat against gender-based violence a priority.
