“El Kahena” fair trade label launched

The Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries Ministry and the Enda inter-Arab association inked Saturday in Tunis a partnership agreement to support the development of fair trade label El Kahena.

The label will guarantee the quality of the product, preserve the identity of productive rural women, improve working conditions and market their products.

El Kahena fair trade project will be based on the responsible consumer co-operative El Kahena market which will be created soon. This co-operative will ensure that El Kahena’s certification of conformity is obtained and products by women farmers affiliated in the fair trade network are marketed.

Those affiliated are called to respect the network’s requirements, including notably avoiding speculation, working with intermediaries and employing minors, officer at the association Fatma Triki said, adding that the El Kahena market co-operative is intended as a sustainable support to projects launched by women farmers.

She further stressed that this project will bring together, in the first stage, some 70 women farmers working within co-operatives placed under the Agriculture Ministry and over a 60-km perimeter of Greater Tunis.

It will also seek to attract new recipients in the fair trade network among women farmers that have benefited from Enda Inter-Arab interventions.

Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries Samir Taieb said the agreement aims to support small rural women farmers and producers and bring them together as part of agricultural servicing co-operatives.

The agreement is part of his ministry’s orientations that aim to encourage social and solidarity economy in addition to supporting rural women, he added.

El Kahena label will encourage the Tunisian to consume these local products and help rural women have good working conditions and market their products on a large scale and even export them.

These co-operatives are an essential component to enrich the solidarity-based economic and social fabric, he pointed out.
