Election silence observed ahead of May 6 municipal vote

Election silence started Saturday ahead of May 6 municipal polls as campaigning came to an end on Friday at midnight. 2,074 lists set their campaign in motion on April 14.

This period runs from May 5 till polling stations close on May 6 pursuant to the organic law of 2017 on elections and referendums.

Candidates are banned from campaigning; any breaches carry fines of 3,000 to 20,000 dinars possibly leading to the cancellation of results and the disqualification of lists that infringed the law.

Some 5.369,892 million voters will elect 350 municipal councils across the country in these first post-Revolution elections.

Results will be announced no later than May 9 or May 13 after consideration of legal challenges.

Security and military pesonnel cast their ballots on April 29 with a turnout not exceeding 12%, that is 4,992 voters out of 36,495, the election panel ISIE Friday said in a press conference.
