KUMASI: The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana stands as the most transparent public institution, according to Mr. Francis Osei-Nsiah, the Ashanti Regional Director of the EC. During a media capacity building training in Kumasi, he highlighted the participatory nature of the electoral processes in Ghana, involving various community actors and overseen by political party agents and independent observers, which he believes underscores the transparency of the EC. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Osei-Nsiah emphasized the minimal role that staff of the Commission play in influencing election outcomes. He pointed out that the recruitment of local community members who conduct the elections and collate results before they are submitted to the Commissioner exemplifies the transparent and hands-off approach of the EC in managing elections. "Arguably, we are first when it comes to transparency," Mr. Osei-Nsiah stated at the event organized by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and funded by the Foreign, C ommonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom. The training aimed to enhance media understanding and reporting of electoral processes, particularly in preparation for the upcoming general elections. It covered a range of topics from the recruitment and training of temporary electoral staff to the registration of voters and the demarcation of electoral boundaries. The goal was to arm journalists with factual information to counter mis/disinformation and ensure accurate reporting leading up to and during the election period. Mr. Osei-Nsiah also stressed the importance of the media's role in maintaining electoral integrity and transparency. He expressed hope that the training would lead to improved media coverage of electoral issues, promoting a well-informed electorate. Furthermore, Daniel Kwame Ampofo Adjei of MFWA underscored the critical role of the media in ensuring a peaceful election, warning of the potential dangers of inaccurate reporting as observed in other African nations. The pa rticipants, equipped with refreshed knowledge and an understanding of the electoral framework, are expected to lead by example in fostering accurate and responsible journalism across the country.
