Obuasi: At a recent mentorship forum held at Christ the King Senior High School, Sarah Agyen-Mensah, Chairperson of the Women in Engineering Obuasi Chapter, emphasized the critical role of women in engineering for national development. The event, organized in collaboration with AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, aimed to inspire female students to pursue careers in engineering. According to Ghana News Agency, the mentorship forum focused on encouraging young women to develop a keen interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects, with the goal of increasing female enrollment in engineering programs at the university level. The initiative also sought to foster a deeper appreciation among women engineers of their vital contributions to the field. Ing. Agyen-Mensah highlighted the disparity in the number of women in the engineering profession in Ghana, noting that women are significantly underrepresented compared to their male counterparts. She pointed out that although successive go vernments have made efforts to bridge this gap, much work remains to be done to achieve gender parity in engineering. The emphasis on STEM education in senior high schools was identified as a strategic approach to attract more women to the engineering sector. Agyen-Mensah remarked on the changing landscape, where more females are advancing in engineering and assuming high-profile roles. Ing. Eric Broni, Chairperson of the Obuasi Chapter of the Ghana Institution of Engineers, discussed the importance of increasing the number of female engineers in the country. He cited statistics indicating that only 10-20% of engineers are females, underscoring the need for targeted empowerment initiatives. Ms. Priscilla Edmondson, the first female winding engineer at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, also spoke at the event. She emphasized the importance of societal support in encouraging more women to enter the engineering field, urging against stereotypes that deter women from pursuing engineering careers. The event concl uded with a call to action for all stakeholders to support and encourage women to explore engineering, highlighting the profession's openness to all genders.
