Ennahdha’s Shura Council affirmed in a statement the need for the party to conduct a deep self-criticism of its policies, to make the necessary revisions and to renovate its programmes, in anticipation of the 11th party congress scheduled for the end of 2021.
The party must put its choices and its positions in line with the expectations of the Tunisian people and the latest developments in the country, the statement added.
The Shura, meeting since Wednesday amid tensions and the withdrawal of several of its members, insists on the party’s commitment to the path of dialogue with all parties, particularly the Presidency of the Republic, to get out of the crisis, achieve social peace and initiate the necessary reforms.
In its statement, the council said it understands the growing popular anger at the failure of economic and social policies, ten years after the revolution.
It held the entire political class responsible for the situation in the country, calling for the need to apologise for the mistakes made and to work to rectify them.
The council voiced concern over the institutional vacancy that has lasted for more than 10 days and the delay in appointing «a person to form a new government.»
It stressed the urgency of submitting the new government to a vote of confidence in parliament to focus on the fight against the pandemic, the mobilisation of resources from the 2021 budget for urgent expenditure and the preparation of the 2022 state budget.
The Council also urged a «return to constitutionality,» calling to unfreeze the parliament to enable it to carry out its mission and redefine its priorities, in accordance with the requirements of the new stage.
Ennahdha is experiencing an internal crisis due to sharp disagreements among its members, some of whom have walked out of the Shura Council meeting, namely MPs Yamina Zoghlami and Jamila Ksiksi.
Party leaders Abdellatif Mekki and Samir Dilou have called, in separate statements, for a “profound revision” of the Ennahdha’s leadership to rectify mistakes.
