The 6th edition of European Union (EU)- African Union (AU) summit, started on Thursday in the Belgian capital, Brussels.
The summit was attended by the leaders of the EU and AU member states, President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, as well as the Secretary-General of the International Organisation of the Francophonie (OIF), Louise Mushikiwabo.
Under the theme “Africa and Europe, two continents with a joint vision for 2030”, the summit, which is attended by President Kais Saied, is an opportunity to determine the priorities for outlining the strategic and political orientations of EU-AU relations.
The leaders of the two unions’ member states are expected to discuss ways to further strengthen the various bilateral partnerships at the summit. They are also expected to discuss tools and solutions to promote stability, peace and security and thereby address the health crisis caused by the coronavirus.
The summit also aims to launch an ambitious Africa-Europe investment package taking into account new global challenges such as climate change and the current health crisis.
Several thematic roundtables will be organised around a number of topical issues including financing for growth, health systems, vaccine production, agriculture, sustainable development, private sector support programmes, migration, education, vocational training, peace, security and governance.
