EU earmarks Euros 20 million to support civil society

The European Union (EU) decided to earmark Euros 20 million for the civil society support programme, Head of the Governance, Social Sectors and Sustainable Development section at the EU Delegation in Tunisia Mario Giuseppe Varrenti said.

In a statement to TAP, Varrenti explained that this support programme has been expanded to target, in addition to the civil society components, the constitutional bodies and the associated independent bodies, specifying that “this amount will be disbursed over 60 months.”

During a workshop to present the new support programme held in Tunis, Varrenti pointed out that it is the second phase of the civil society support project.

For the European Union, he said, support for the consolidation of the rule of law is one of the highest priorities, which is why “it was decided to widen the list of beneficiaries to concern this time constitutional bodies in addition to the civil society.”

According to him, the former civil society support programme demonstrated a strong and important presence of associations at the regional and local levels. “We will continue with this approach focused on supporting small civil society organisations at the local level,” he added.

“The programme has channeled civil society, social energies and civil society forces present at the local level to build a public space,” said Varrenti, adding that “Euros 7 million were devoted for the first phase.”

The official underlined the programme focuses on civil society independently of its thematic interventions. “This is support for the consolidation of civil society, especially at the local level and for encouraging participation in public life.”

Varrenti recalled that the first phase had helped more than 1,000 organisations and associations to participate in public life, asserting that the EU will continue to support associations and civil society in all governorates and will endeavour to help hundreds of others benefit from the programme.

The workshop was attended by representatives of civil society, constitutional bodies and the Ministry of Relations with Constitutional Bodies, Civil Society and Human Rights.
