EU Foreign Policy Chief Urges ‘More Strategic’ Action to Maintain Geopolitical Role

Brussels: EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Monday that the EU must act more strategically if it wants to remain a geopolitical actor, as global development aid declines.

According to Anadolu Agency, Kallas emphasized the importance of strategic action during a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council focused on development. She highlighted Europe's position as the largest donor of humanitarian and development aid globally, but stressed the necessity for more effective use of resources. "That means that we have to match our tools . to the needs of our partners, but also to take into consideration our own interests," Kallas stated.

Kallas expressed concerns about the limited resources available under initiatives like the Global Gateway, urging a more strategic allocation of resources to maximize impact. She also emphasized the importance of flexibility in the EU's partnerships, noting the need for realignment if partners support countries such as Russia or Iran.

She also addressed the broader implications of the war in Iran, particularly its effects on vulnerable populations. "We see the energy prices rising, we see the inflation, . and also the crisis of fertilizers that . might bring about famine," she warned.

The EU, she added, is enhancing cooperation with regional actors, including Gulf countries, while continuing to support UN efforts to assist those most affected.
