Tunis: The European Union expressed concern over the recent verdicts upheld by the Tunisian Court of Cassation in the "plot against state security" trial, which resulted in lengthy prison sentences for several political figures, activists, human rights defenders, and journalists, including European Union citizens.

According to European Union, there are questions about the full respect for guarantees related to a fair trial. The EU, in its regular exchanges with Tunisian authorities, reiterates the importance of ensuring full respect for human rights, including freedom of expression and the right to a fair trial.

The EU also noted its regret that contact with diplomats accredited to Tunisia, including European ones, had been used as grounds for indictment or as evidence against the accused individuals.

The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to its partnership with Tunisia, emphasizing continued support for the Tunisian people in their efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and promote human rights. The EU called on Tunisian authorities to restore conditions conducive to pluralism and allow independent voices to contribute to the country's development.
