Accra: Fall Armyworms are at their devastating best destroying large tracts of corn farms in the Adaklu Kodzobi Electoral Area of the Adaklu district. When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited some of the farms, it saw them destroyed by the worms. According to Ghana News Agency, the farmers stated that the destruction caused by the worms to their farms was the worst since it was an emergency in about ten years. They contended that the erratic rainfall pattern was also not helping matters. Mr. Samuel Akpah, a 66-year-old corn farmer, shared his plight with the GNA, revealing that his five-acre corn farm was completely destroyed by the worms. Despite using all the recommended chemicals to control the infestation, Mr. Akpah noted that they had no effect, resulting in a total loss of his GHC6,000 investment. Similarly, Mr. Williams Agbati, another farmer, recounted his experience, having ventured into corn farming about ten years ago. He began planting corn this year in the last week of February, anticipating a bumper harvest in June. However, the emergence of the worms in mid-March thwarted his efforts, as they proved unstoppable and devastated his farm. The farmers have called on the Adaklu District Directorate of Agriculture for assistance, expressing concerns over a potential famine in the area if the situation is not addressed. They also alleged a lack of presence from Agricultural Extension Officers in the area. Madam Eugenia Bruce, Adaklu District Director of Agriculture, acknowledged that the Extension Officer for the area had traveled, and a replacement had not been found due to a staff shortage. She advised farmers to spray their farms with Fall Armyworms control chemicals after two weeks of planting and to switch to a different brand after another two weeks. Madam Bruce assured that the Directorate had Fall Armyworms control chemicals available for free distribution to farmers. She encouraged them to visit the Directorate or call 0249809864 for advice if they encountered any challenges.
