Families of Zarzis missing migrants continue protest, shut local port down

Families of the missing and victims of the shipwreck of a migrant b oat off Zarzis, as well as civil society activists, continue their three-day protest on Wednesday, as they have closed the port area in Zarzis.

Protesters blocked economic activities in the commercial port, preventing staff and workers from joining their workstations. They denounced “the indifference of officials towards the tragedy,” which cost the lives of their relatives.

They called for divulging the truth about the obscure circumstances of the disaster at sea and the rapid burial of the bodies of some of the missing without prior identification.

President Kais Saied, on October 17, had ordered further investigations in the sinking of a boat off the coast of Zarzis on September 20 at night that claimed the lives of 18 people.
