FAO Ghana and Agric Ministry Launch World Food Day 2025 Commemoration

Accra: The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Ghana and the Ministry for Food and Agriculture (MoFA) have launched the World Food Day 2025 commemoration, calling for solidarity and coordinated actions to transform agri-food systems.

According to Ghana News Agency, the World Food Day 2025 encourages governments, organizations, sectors, and communities to collaborate in transforming agri-food systems to ensure access to healthy diets and promote harmony with the planet. Celebrated every October 16, this year’s event, themed “Hand in Hand for Better Food and Better Future,” emphasizes the importance of global cooperation in creating a peaceful, sustainable, prosperous, and food-secure future.

During the launch at the FAO Ghana Office, Mr. Abebe Haile-Gabriel, Assistant Director General and FAO Representative for Africa, emphasized the stakeholders’ responsibility in ensuring that food is accessible, safe, nutritious, and affordable in various countries. He praised the Government of Ghana for the ‘Feed Ghana Programme,’ aimed at creating jobs, reducing import bills, and modernizing agriculture through investments and mechanization.

The World Food Day also marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Food Agriculture Organisation in Rome, Italy. As part of the celebration, the FAO will host the 5th edition of the World Food Forum. This forum is intended as a global incubator for bold ideas, bringing together government officials, global players, scientists, innovators, and investors across three key pillars: Global Youth Action, Science Innovation Forum, and Hand in Hand Investments Forum.

Mr. John Setor Dumelo, Deputy Minister, MoFA, stated that World Food Day is a call for abundant food production, with the remnant after consumption being processed to add value. He highlighted the ‘Feed Ghana Programme,’ launched by President Mahama in April, which focuses on year-round farming with irrigation as a thematic approach, urging participation and emphasizing efficiency over land size.
