“Faykin Li Bietna” association calls on government to activate authority for sustainable development and rights of future generations

The national network of environmental associations Faykin Li Bietna (Vigilant for our Environment) calls on the government, in its report on environmental laws, to activate the authority for sustainable development and rights of future generations, the only authority set by article 129 of the 2014 Constitution and which has still not been activated, said network Executive Director Slimane Ben Youssef.

It is in this regard that the Tunisian Environment and Development Federation (French: FTED) has presented since 2016 a draft status ruling the establishment of this authority that must be consulted for bills on economic, social, environmental matters and for development plans, he indicated during the network’s annual meeting held Saturday on Tunis.

The draft status of this authority is still in storage at the concerned ministries and its examination by the House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR) has been sine die postponed owing to time constraints and other commitments.

The creation of this authority will help provide more coherence to sectorial policies and legislations adopted by the Tunisian State and to development plans.

The report on environmental laws reviewed some environmental problems in the country such as the ongoing marginalisation of environmental institutions under other ministries, making them lose their monitoring power.

Poor afforestation programmes, limited water supply programmes in spite of the large number of projects, harm and infringements against the coastline and public properties, deterioration of the environmental situation in some neighbourhoods, risk of the appearance of some plagues and the modest plans of renewable energy generalization in public enterprises and houses are also among these issues.

Besides, Ben Youssef announced to TAP the conclusion of an agreement in principle for the creation of the Maghreb Union of Environmental Associations operating in the five Maghreb countries namely Algeria, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania and Tunisia.

This charter seeks to provide a diagnosis of the environmental situation in Arab Maghreb countries so as to achieve joint projects with the support of international funders and help sharing expertise and experiences by organising meetings in these five countries.

Created in February 2017, the Faykin Li Bietna association gathers civil society organisations to defend environmental matters and propose scientific initiatives to overcome problems and shortcomings in this field.
