Fech Nestanew campaign: arrests involved 1,000 people

The arrests that took place during the first days of the “Fech Nestanew” campaign (what are we waiting for?) before the start of the vandalism, involved 1,000 people including 76 activists, said, Thursday, Ayoub Jaouadi, spokesman for Fech Nestanew.

Speaking at a press briefing at the headquarters of the Tunisian Journalists’ Union, Jaouadi said some of those arrested have been subjected to violence and sometimes torture.

According to him, most of those arrested and brought to justice were found innocent, believing that this police attitude illustrates a desire to adopt a policy based on intimidation whose sole purpose is to prohibit young people the right to demonstrate.

In this context, he announced the formation of a national support committee for protesters and people recently arrested, which will be composed of deputies, representatives of civil society, artists and lawyers. This commission, he said, will have the mission to provide to these people lawyers to defend them.

Naoures Douzi, member and activist in the Fech Nestanew movement said that their campaign will continue until the 2018 budget law is revised, adding that a rally is expected tomorrow before the House of People’s Representatives.

For his part, representative of the campaign, Hamza Nasri called the Ministry of the Interior to open a serious investigation into the circumstances of the death of Khemais Yaferni who died the night of January 8, 2018 in a popular rally in Tebourba (governorate of the Manouba).
