Female farmers represent almost 43% of all women active in rural areas, i.e. 500,000 people, Minister of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries Samir Taieb said Wednesday at the inauguration of the second edition of the African Forum of Female Farmer .

The forum placed under the theme Active Independent in the economy is held from November 1 to 3 on the fringes of SIAMAP exhibition (October 31-November 5) at El Kram Exhibition Park.

Taieb reiterated the importance of the role assumed by these women to provide the country with agricultural products, insisting however that they are suffering from several difficulties, such as access to finance and lack of social coverage

A strategy covering the 2017-2020 period was developed nationally the aim of improving rural women’s situation and working conditions in co-ordination with the concerned governmental departments and some representatives of civil society, he indicated.

A large number of African women farmers are living in appalling conditions though they provide food to Africa and Europe, President of Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (UTAP) Abdelmajid Zar regretted, recalling that between 60 and 70% of the agricultural activity in the African continent is carried out by female farmers.

He said agriculture in Africa suffers from two major weaknesses, namely reluctance of youth to practice this activity and poor conditions in which women farmers work.

He further urged to restructure this sector so as to become more cost-effective and attractive, affirming that agriculture represent the future of all African countries.

Minister of Animal and Fish Resources of CAte d’Ivoire Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani paid tribute to the African women farmers.

Female farmers are generally more efficient and generous and work aptly, better than men, he pointed out.

Women are the African economy’s engine, they are active and always bring the most, he indicated.
