OBUASI: The Ghana Chamber of Mines, in collaboration with AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine, and Mac Mining and Construction Partners, convened the fifth Mining Industry Marketing Expo in Obuasi, focusing on enhancing local content in the mining sector. The event served as a platform for stakeholders within the mining value chain to discuss strategies aimed at fortifying the local content regulations and empowering domestic businesses to compete with international counterparts. According to Ghana News Agency, the two-day expo themed "Repurposing Local Content for Economic Transformation" provided a venue for industry players to engage and explore appropriate methods to bolster local business operations in the mining industry. Mr. Elijah Adansi-Bonah, Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi, emphasized the relevance of the event's theme, aligning with ongoing initiatives to transform the local economy and ensure that Ghanaians reap substantial benefits from the wealth generated through natural resources. Mr. Sulem an Koney, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, highlighted the necessity of broadening the scope of industrial procurement to include a diverse range of professionals involved in decision-making processes. He stressed the importance of enhancing local content regulations to address challenges faced by suppliers, noting the Chamber's memorandum of understanding with the Ghana Standards Authority to validate supplier inputs. Mr. Awie Frey, Head of Operations at AngloGold Ashanti, emphasized recognizing the technological advancements driving the mining industry's evolution. He acknowledged the critical role of support services in achieving industry objectives and maximizing operational efficiency. Meanwhile, Mr. Seth Quaye, Chief Operating Officer of Mac Partners Group LLC, underscored the significance of platforms like the expo in facilitating stakeholder interactions to address sector challenges effectively. Mr. Quaye also noted the importance of regulators in ensuring equitable benefits fo r all participants within the mining support services sector, beyond merely guiding local companies on compliance matters.
