First Tunisian competition for agricultural and agri-food products to start on November 29

The first Tunisian competition for agricultural and agri-food products will take place on November 29th and 30th and on December 8th, 9th and 10th at the Cite des Sciences in Tunis at the initiative the Agricultural Investment Promotion Agency (APIA), the Swiss Embassy in Tunis, and the Tunis office of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

This event aims to strengthen the development of local products and ensure their access to foreign markets and their export under a Tunisian label and an appellation of origin like Djebba figs, Gabes pomegranates and Sbiba apples and “Harissa Tounsia”.

Some 220 local products have been selected to participate in this contest, which will be held every two years, during which 99 tasters will test these products according to pre-established standards before rating them and choosing the best ones.

APIA CEO Abderrahmen Chafai said at a press conference in Tunis on Monday that awarding prizes to the winners will enable them to better promote their local products at home and abroad.

The official said that the new investment law, which came into force in April 2017, allowed a 50% premium to farmers wishing to create an agricultural label, to encourage them to promote their products.

APIA’s Director of Partnership Mohamed El Tokabri announced plans to develop a national guide to local agricultural products and a website to publicise the products that will be priced.

For his part, Representative of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Tunis office, Noria Ikirman presented the methodology and conditions for participation in the Tunisian competition, which aims to promote the image of the local product to the Tunisian consumer.

Among the conditions for participation in this competition are the adoption of specific and historical standards and methods of producing local food products.

The UNIDO official said that the first inventory recorded about 415 local agricultural and food products with the participation of about 200 professionals. He added that after the selection process, 220 products were approved to participate in this contest, she said, adding that these products are spread over 11 northern governorates (86 products), 6 central governorates and 7 southern governorates (88 products).
